Thveidai Saamnak Karpar (2024) Review

There is little drama or tension in the story - challenges and problems arise, but they are quickly resolved or even avoided by our smart protagonist. On the one hand, this is great because Lord knows we have all seen enough unnecessary anger and conflict removed in the series, so it is a fun and chilling watch with a loving and supportive relationship. On the other hand, the lack of conflict or tension also means that this is not a "story" but just a series of events in our protagonist's life (fairly standard for the life genre), so after a while I started skipping past scenes that were not related to cooking. On the other hand, there are a few unresolved threads at the end that I wish were more appropriate - there really is no standard level and resolution, so honestly, they could have just added another episode to cover them (or put them a little earlier).

The characters and acting are mostly good - some highlights for me are Erqiao (FL's sister) and ML's mother, and props to the writers for having such a hot-hearted female character who is still a good person. Yuhuai is also a great ML, and the romance between him and Xiaomai is so sweetly acted and presented that I was almost captivated by their scenes together. One thing that bothered me a little was that Xiaomai was a Mary Sue - her cooking was the best, she was always better than her competitors, and she always had the answer. While she was a main character, she just wasn't interesting to me because there was no character growth. If she was always the best/smartest, where was there room for growth? And this also meant there was no room for the other chefs to grow or contribute by coming up with ideas or solutions.
