Smurfs

Review

This movie feels like it has no point in making it. The plot seems simple, right? Papa Smurf is kidnapped by Razamel, Gargamel's brother. It's not. The movie has many plot holes and useless characters with cardboard-like personalities. I found the characters to be disgusting. The Smurfs don't seem like loving, compassionate, and friendly creatures. They preach kindness, but they never practice it. For example, the Smurfs look down on No Name Smurf and are incredibly condescending to him. They insult and mock him for doing wrong.

The acting is poorly done. The actors are fake. A prime example is Smurfette, played by Rihanna. While Fenty may have a lot of talent, she was a poor choice for Smurfette. Smurfette is supposed to have a happy, high-pitched voice, however, Rihanna doesn’t live up to that. Additionally, Smurfette doesn’t have her own positive attitude. She is unsupportive and dismissive, especially of No Name Smurf. At one point in the film, she insists that he needs therapy when he is in a difficult situation.

Grouchy, Clumsy, Brainy, Gutsy, and Vanity are not prominent characters. It focuses on Smurfette and the No Name Smurfs. I would argue that there are too many characters that don’t really add anything to the story. Turtle, Ron, Mama, Poot, Ken, Joel, Tadpole, and Genie, the Purple Book. These characters make the plot even more confusing. Additionally, the Smurfs don’t work together and don’t seem to care much about each other, which is definitely something to do with the acting.

To sum up everything that has been said, this movie is a quick cash grab that is a waste of time. You are better off watching the cartoon and/or The Smurfs (2011). I can guarantee that it is far more hilarious than the opposite of this movie. There are many other things I haven't mentioned that make this flick terrible. I think the two-star rating for The Smurfs is generous.
