Summary of the story
This is so good! This is the first John Wick movie I’ve seen in theaters, so I’m really excited. John Wick fans will really enjoy this installment. It stands on its own and they did a great job overall with character development and world building. The movie is well shot, the acting is great, the action is great, and there are some really interesting elements throughout the movie. The theater is shaking with crazy action sequences and sound editing that make me sweat a lot.
Ana De Armas is so good (compliments on her performance). I really love her acting style and she always gives such a charming performance (I loved her in Knives Out and Blade Runner 2049). I really hope to see her as Eve in more episodes and hopefully she can be with John Wick in the next one. I love seeing Ian McShane in everything he’s been in, and it’s great to see Lance Reddick again (it’s so sad he won’t be in any more John Wick movies since he passed away). It was great to see Keanu Reeves as Wick, and the fight scenes between him and Ana De Armas were really cool. Anjelica Houston was great as the director of the Ruska Roma club.
The action was great. The shots were really well shot. The hand-to-hand combat was really cool to watch. The cinematography was amazing, and the sound design was really crazy. The script was really good (I know some people didn’t like the script, but I thought it was written like the other John Wick movies). The world building was really good. I liked that they explored other institutions outside of the high society, and it was smart to have the main villain be a fanatical religious leader (it made his motivations easier to understand). The filmmakers did an excellent job focusing on the specific details with Ruska Roma and how they trained the ballerinas.
The subject matter was also interesting. I appreciate that Eve is willing to sacrifice her life for others, and that despite the violence in the film, Ballerina still maintains the theme of protecting the innocent. The film is set in a corrupt and fallen world, so I like that Eve tries her best not to kill people like in the other John Wick films.
The only negative thing with Ballerina is that they could have developed Eve's sister more. They also forced John Wick into the film without giving him any motivation to participate (although John helping Eve take down the cult leader was great). It also feels like Eve becomes a brutal killer a little too quickly after she was taken in by Ruska Roma as a child. Some of the gory scenes in the film could have been toned down.
