Summary of the story
There were definitely concerns that it would fall flat, but I was so wrong. The chemistry between Mason Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerald Butler throughout the film is so over the top that I can barely believe it. The Father-Son Duo is so heartbreaking, with Mason brilliantly portraying how much it hurts to feel like you’re not living up to your parents’ expectations, and Gerald Butler steals the film with a single tear that shows more than I thought possible. Nico Parker couldn’t have been a better choice, as she plays Astrid, not only the main character’s love interest, but a clear independent character who still manages to pull off a great performance with Hiccup’s loyalty. There’s not a single weak character throughout the film, teenage or otherwise. Each one shows why they were cast within the first few minutes and never disappoints. If you’re a fan of the show (especially RTTE), you won’t be disappointed, as their characters are also fleshed out. Great set pieces and attention to detail, great new lines (I don't know why everyone is saying this is a reshoot, because it's not a reshoot scene, with lots of original lines and new dialogue that really adds a lot of authenticity and personality). Also, really good representation of the side. I'm not a fan of when a movie is obviously just looking for brownie points with inclusion, but think that representation is a good stand for personality or culture ("Yes, we have black characters who do nothing but stand there, how grateful are you to us"), but this movie really cares and takes the time to provide context in a way that feels natural and doesn't add anything extra to Viking. I think my only real complaint is that the music could have been reshot. I definitely think Powell was held back by the expectation that he had to keep the original soundtrack, but that always doesn't work well with this movie, because you can hear some of the notes being cut. There are some beats (dialogue-wise) missing as well, but they're rare and easily made up for.
