Summary of the story
When you think of unicorns as humans do, they’re white, possibly majestic creatures that give us the feeling that everything will be okay. A24’s new film DEATH OF A UNICORN takes that story and turns it into a hilarious but clever comedy. Elliot (Paul Rudd) is the widowed father of Ridley (Jenna Ortega). They drive to the home of Elliot’s dying boss Odell and need a proxy to take over his company after he’s gone. Other characters include Odell’s wife Belinda (Téa Leoni), their heartbroken son Shephard (Will Poulter), and Griff (Anthony Carrigan), their housekeeper. While driving, Elliot and Ridley hit what looks like a small horse with a round head. Disturbed, they put it in a tree stump and continue on their way. When someone else finds it, they “ride the horse.” I really enjoyed this movie for the most part. The cast is great, they know what they're doing and have fun with it, especially Poulter and Carrigan. I guess you could think of this as JURASSIC PARK. Greedy people who like to make fun of things they don't understand, you know the deal. It gets more violent as the movie goes on. I enjoyed the great but uninteresting characters, each of whom had their moment to shine. The CGI moments weren't the greatest, but on a budget of only $15 million, I can't fault them. My only problem with this movie is how they end up showing us a few different paths the story could have taken, but it doesn't really go down any of them. They're all good ideas, but it would have been better if it had stuck to one and delved deeper. Other than that, the humor is funny and the violence is violence. Whether or not Death of the UNICORN works for you, the original film is always a welcome and refreshing one.
